The pilot program “Rain Barrels” is an experimental initiative developed by the Technological Water Research Institute Lic. Arturo Gleason Santana A.C to promote the care of the environment and the adoption of sustainable technologies in the population through the Rainwater harvesting. The purpose of the initiative is to promote water conservation for the current population and future generations through the collection of rainwater.
WHAT IS IT?
They are small containers used to capture rainwater from building roofs through gutters or downspouts. When it rains downpipes move the rain water towards the barrel. If the container fills and continues to rain, the water that is not stored in the device comes out through a pipe located at the top of the barrel. This stored water should ideally be discharged over a green area away from the foundations of the house.
The best part of having a rain barrel are the many benefits it will create for the environment and its economy. Rain barrels help:

By capturing the rainwater that falls on the roof, you help reduce the amount of water that flows on the streets. That little action can keep dangerous urban pollutants like pesticides, fertilizers, car fluids, and pet waste dumped in the oceans.
Some drinking water in Guadalajara is used for irrigation of green areas. Using rainwater to water the grass, trees, and plants is an excellent way to conserve water.
Transferring drinking water from Chapala Lake, aquifers, wells and the Calderón dam requires that a certain amount of energy be consumed, by using less water from these places, less energy will be consumed.
The main aquifers that supply water to the ZMG are the Arenal Aquifer, Atemajac Aquifer, Aquifers, Ameca Aquifer, Toluquilla Aquifer and San Isidro Aquifer. Of the six aquifers 5 are overexploited, since the amount of water entering the aquifer is less than the one that is removed. Capturing rainwater will allow less water to be extracted from the subsoil. When rain infiltrates permeable surfaces such as lawns or gardens helps to recharge underground water stores.
Every time the water tap is not open, money is being saved. This can be considered as a gift from nature.
USES OF RAINWATER
Rainwater itself is generally clean, but it can pick up microorganism, pollutants and debris when it falls to the ceiling. For this reason water can not be used for drinking, washing or cooking. However there are various tasks in which rainwater can be used:
WASHING VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT
Washing objects is another use that can be given to rainwater. Vehicles, gardens, tools, lawn mowers.
Discharges to the toilet account for about 27% of the total water consumed (Blarowski, 2017). Using rainwater for toilet flushing helps to reduce the amount of water consumed by this concept.
TO MAKE COMPOUND
Water is an essential element for the decomposition of the fertilizer. Rainwater can be used to irrigate the compost.
Rainwater is naturally designed for the use of and is easy to use should pots exist inside the house. Rainwater can be used in handwashing or an irrigation system directly connected to the rain barrel.
